+++ Even in hard times: above average business activity +++
Even during the economic crisis, Saxony-Anhalt appears economically robust in comparison to the other federal states. Important factors,such as customer proximity, the supply of qualified workers or the national transport links, make Saxony-Anhalt an attractive business location even during times of crisis. In spite of the economic crisis, the gross domestic product has increased by 1.4%. With this increase, Saxony-Anhalt has reached an outstanding second place in a nationwide comparison, the best territorial state behind Hamburg, and clearly falling above average with the new, former GDR German states (0.9%) and above the entire German average by 1.3%.
However, in the first quarter of 2009, there was a crisis-induced drop in economic performance. The gross domestic product therefore shrank in comparison to the previous quarter - yet it still stayed 2.1% better than the national average.
The effects of the economic crisis are still statistically being felt on the job market. This shows a stable tendency in the current unemployment statistics. In June 2009, the proportion of unemployment decreased by 0.4% in comparison to May. In comparison to June last year, unemployment figures have worsened by 0.2%.
